Mitts are a great knitting project for both knitter and recipient. However, in this case, the Knit Red Cable Mitts, created by Diane Soucy of Knitting Pure and Simple, are more than just a project; they also support the Stitch Red campaign.

Stitch Red Campaign:
Stitch Red is a national heart disease awareness campaign supported by the Needlearts industry. The campaign is driving efforts to draw attention to heart disease, the #1 killer of women in the United States, help people understand their risk factors for the disease and encourage the adoption of healthier lifestyles to protect their heart health.

A majority of manufacturers and designers throughout the industry are creating and selling Stitch Red products to benefit the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) in support of The Heart Truth®. Local yarn stores across the country are supporting the campaign by carrying these products and hosting Stitch Red events to raise awareness about heart disease.

Stitch Red on the TODAY! Show:
The Stitch Red Campaign was featured by anchors Kathy Lee and Hoda on the TODAY! Show on February 1st. They held up a couple of knitted items that were generously donated by Stitch Red supporters and mentioned that the pieces were beautiful. It was quite an honor for Stitch Red to be recognized by one of America’s top rated morning shows with 5 million viewers.

Next round- knit.

Next round- p 3, k to within 3 sts of marker, p 6, k to within 3 sts of marker, p 3.

Next round- k to marker, remove it, turn work and begin working back and forth on the front section as follows-

k 3, p to within 3 sts of marker, k 3, remove marker, turn work.

Next row- knit.

Next row- k 3, p to within 3 sts of marker, k 3, turn work

Continue to work the last 2 rows until work measures 24½ ins from the top of the shoulder.

Change to smaller 24 inch needle and work 5 rows in garter st. Bind off loosely, break yarn.

Using the larger 24 inch needle, join yarn to remaining sts and work back of sweater same as front, keeping 3 edge sts in garter and the rest in stockinette st. Work to same length as front, ending with 5 rows of garter. Bind off.
